Question: do I set this sprawling and decrepit website on fire? Or put it in a box in the corner after elaborate, time-consuming and expensive renovations are done? Is there some kind of alternative option?

I can't even be bothered to make a form for this so the question is rhetorical. As is obvious, the site has been rarely updated in recent years. I have recently discovered I am much older than I feel, and it is time to accept that I - like everyone else - am subject to my own mortality. This presents many opportunities for fun!

Here Comes the Rooster

January 19, 2017

Strutting in to the future, reminded that we always face the unknown. Pride, shame, honesty, ego, courage, fear. Events don't cause our feelings, it's our responses to those events that do.

Looking back. A small piece of writing included as part of this collection from Wild Bush, a residency run by Amber Berson that I participated in in 2012 at Lac Paquin, Quebec.

Children's Story

February 19, 2016

The results of my 2015 Toronto Public Library residency are now online. Deep feelings on fighting with your parents, how animals live and the best way to destroy a castle. Excerpt on the front page, full performance here.

The Midpoint 3.33

January 29, 2016

Well, that was a year.

Swimmer's Group made a little zine of some of my paintings and drawings. Digital preview here. Some digital-only work coming soon from some other publishers. In the meanwhile, I am learning new languages and sitting in the sun (when available).

The Midpoint

January 29, 2015

I'm sitting in a warm room on an island covered in snow. This time last year was a similar feeling. It's good to have these times.

Two new stories. One about a cool guy. When I first wrote it I sent it to two friends and then promptly buried it. I posted it this past fall, and it's still disturbing. The other is about a trip to the beach. What does your holiday look like?

November 21, 2014

After months-long delay, the premiere episode of I Will Tell You Exactly What I Think of you from this past August's SummerWorks is now online. You can follow the project's YouTube channel at youtube.com/IWTYEWITOY. Many thanks to Catherine Ribeiro for helping with the edit.

October 24, 2014

Slowly putting things together. Watercolours from Eight Stories are now online here for your viewing pleasure.

Nuit Blanche 2014

October 5, 2014

Highlights from Toronto's premiere art circus:
-overflowing garbage bin, 7:30pm
-Urban Serenade, cardboard box in centre of physics demonstration with accompanying artist statement (later stolen)
-cruel sound installation playing amplified whistling into a housing project full of poor people who are all being evicted (next to a video loop of a wrecking ball).
-Animosity-Filled Traffic Jam at Richmond and Peter streets
-Yuppie Harassing Homeless Man

October 3, 2014

Yuula Benivolski and I were kettled with our friends by riot cops at Queen and Spadina in a thunderstorm in 2010. It would have been crummy enough for it to have happened, but what makes it worse is seeing how in the years since it just keeps on happening (Occupy, Ferguson, Tahrir, Taksim, etc.). Cynicism must be the result of idealism running up against reactionary outcomes. Anyhow, we were asked to contribute something to this year's Nuit Blanche, and thought it would be funny to make some Carnival cut outs. Come check it out if you're in the neighbourhood.

August 14, 2014

Two thoughtful reviews of both Common Fate and I Will Tell You Exactly What I Think of You. Two performances of each left this weekend.

The livestream for I Will Tell You Exactly What I Think of You is at youtube.com/IWTYEWITOY. Check in later if you're having problems with it, a back-up will be posted eventually.

For those who like it live, advance tickets can be purchased online for Common Fate and I Will Tell You Exactly What I Think of You, with a double bill on Saturday, August 16 at 6pm.

Two Shows

August 5, 2014

This August I have two shows as part of the SummerWorks theatre festival in Toronto. Both are very special and very different. Common Fate premieres Tuesday, August 12 at 6:30pm and features four dancers (Amelia Ehrhardt, Emily Law, Julia Male and Chelsea Omel) and three musicians (Isla Craig, Brodie West and Andrew Zukerman) performing in a round accompanied by several animated projections. I Will Tell You Exactly What I Think of You is an emotional endurance test. It premieres Wednesday, August 13 at 6pm. There is one microphone, and it is pointed in my direction.

LIMITED SEATING. Advance tickets can be purchased online for Common Fate and I Will Tell You Exactly What I Think of You, with a double bill on Saturday, August 16 at 6pm.

Also up, new oil paintings and the menu link to performances is fixed :-|.

The English Language

March 2, 2014

Well, that was interesting. I got a little caught up IRL this February and it was a very good time for personal growth (this is only slightly euphemistic). I'll be updating the site with more images, videos and attempts to explain myself over the spring.

In the meanwhile, my first collection of short stories is coming out on March 6. Adult Breastfeeding Relationship, a story in the book, is posted on the text page. Go have fun.

The book is launching at Wil Aballe Art Projects in Vancouver, where you can also get a limited edition version with an original watercolour (fancy). More event info here. I'll be telling people what I think of them at the launch, and also in private the following Saturday (for a price, you get your privacy).

Announcements for launches in other cities coming soon. So soon.

Deep Dark

December 4, 2013

First run of Common Fate was really good. Images and video coming soon. In the meanwhile, I have a new page for I Will Tell You Exactly What I Think of You, which got a really nice little mention in an Art 21 blog post on Night Gallery. If you're in the Los Angeles area, I highly recommend checking them out. They're really good with words and images. Even the mailing list is interesting.

I'll be painting watercolour portraits this holiday season. My events page will list dates an locations. Feel free to contact me if you want to make a personal order.

Open Secrets

November 21, 2013

I'm in the final week-and-a-bit of production for a preview (nice way to say I'm not sure what it is yet) of a new projection performance. If you're in Toronto and interested in having a really nice evening on Sunday, December 1, please buy a ticket here to the preview of Common Fate. It's going to be very special, and includes a night-time boat ride through the lagoons.

If you're interested, there's a nice interview with me in Kapsula, an online magazine.

The Entertainment District

April 28, 2013

My brother got married today, and it was a beautiful ceremony. There are moments that are cinematic, and then there are moments when you can't see the cinema until later (if you bother to stay for the show).

What does it mean to type a word? We will not be doing it for much longer. Maybe the choice will be write or speak. Which will you choose?

What do people expect you to tell them when you sugar-coat? Can they taste it? Does the taste of salt appeal to them more? Can they tell the difference? What does it mean to judge someone's character, and how long does it take for you to really understand? Is it even possible to understand?

If I were a woman on TV I would look at those pictures and think "her?"

I'm Just Looking for a Best Friend.

March 31, 2013

As it turns out, Subjects went absolutely spectacularly. You can see the results now, and you're welcome.

If you are waiting for your IWTYEWITOY video, it's coming, eventually, along with a website. Unless you didn't show up in person. I'm not getting paid to do this, gotta choose my priorities and I'm choosing the people close to me. Which, incidentally, is what the internet date I might be in love with told me, and I think it means he's not sure how much time he wants to spend with me considering he's moving back to his partner in the USA this summer. Oh well.

Anyhow, it doesn't matter because I'm working on a short story collection as well as some new paintings. The stories will be published this fall through Wil Aballe Art Projects, who is doing some interesting stuff in Vancouver. Check back for more info.

I Will Tell You Exactly What I Think of You

February 5, 2013

So, Subjects hasn't turned out quite so... spectacularly. I've never been one to deny the people what they want, so my temporary production facility has added a new show to the roster, based on my true passion, telling people exactly what I think of them. All videos are posted at youtube.com/IWTYEWITOY.

If you are interested, you can show up in person at Eastern Bloc in Montreal, 1-5 PM Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Alternately, send me an e-mail to IWTYEWITOY@gmail.com. Make sure to state if you would like your name included in the video, or a randomized number.

February 1, 2013

I'm in Montreal right now, doing another season of Subjects, and also about to have my 30. Both require the cooperation of other people, who may or may not have the time or inclination to share.

Apprehension has two meanings.

Generative Vs. Non-Generative

November 18, 2012

These are the issues I would like to concern myself with. I am writing short stories now, you can make a request.

There is a lot of range between Talking and Staying Silent.

September 24, 2012

I'm going through old work. It's partly tying up loose ends, and mostly trying to figure out where I was coming from. You can now see a lot of my old work through Vtape. New things coming soon, but sort of like this dream I had on the weekend: I gave birth to a baby I wasn't expecting, and wasn't sure what it was when it came out of me. I left it in the care of others while I went to use the toilet and figure my shit out. On the way back I was distracted by a choir.

September 6, 2012

Tonight: watching the livestream of the Democratic National Convention while discussing tax law.

Today my Great Auntie Molly was in town from The Valley, and we had lunch. She told me last night she dreamt about having lunch with me, and that I was 6 feet tall with broad shoulders and dark, dark frizzy hair.

Rhetoric Games

Tonight: watching the livestream of the Republican National Convention while listening to Smooth Jazz. Whatever.

Temporary Archives

February 24, 2012

I've been pretty fortunate to have Matthew Ryan Smith write a thoughtful essay on Subjects, my Reality TV Show from last year. You can read it here.

Private Lives for Public Viewing.

Last night I made a new friend. It reminded me how you can't get more real than lived experience.

As Though Every Story Were Written Just For You

January 31, 2012

That's just how it feels sometimes.

Here are some qualities that seem positive or negative, but are actually ambiguous, depending on context: ambition, competitiveness, neutrality.

Possibly Maybe

January 9, 2012

The animation and performance sections have been updated. Something old, something new. I made a music video for Muskox, sort of like X, but longer. You can watch it here.

BTW I got an A- in Biology 101. It's really helping my future plans. I just want to be cruising on this all the time, perhaps develop some low-risk release mechanisms?

November 4, 2011

That's my mark in my Biology 101 course midterm, and if I can keep that up I have a pretty funny artwork in the from of my transcript when this is all over.

What I really want is to discover the cure for misery.

The Lovers, Reversed

September 19, 2011

If anyone is looking for me I'm busy studying and working on things that are pleasing or will make my future more interesting.

Please let me know if you hear about anything really really cool.

Self Indulgence

July 20, 2011

I was going to make a list of all of my friends, ever, and how I knew them and what they meant.

Self indulgence is not a bad thing. There are a lot of people out there who should be more self indulgent. Self indulgence makes people happy, which means they are less likely to pick a fight or steal something from you out of necessity.

Love is self-indulgent, because it is so gratifying.

June 10, 2011

This summer is going to be great.

Yo Guy posted my video along with Petra Cortright, which is pretty flattering b/c she's making amazing stuff. This blog posts new content everyday, so you might have to scroll a bit... Recommended for when you need to occupy yourself with watching videos.

Send Me Your Most Troubling Quotations

May 13, 2011

I mean it.

Summer approaches and I anticipate long days of reading and working on 100's of drawings for something N-E-W. In the meanwhile, I have updated the performance and projects pages. Subjects, the most recent thing I have worked on, is mostly complete, and you should check it out if you have not already done so. We'll be releasing it as a DVD with *BONUS FOOTAGE* eventually, so check back. I'd like to do it again somewhere new, will update.

March 29, 2011

Subjects, the new reality TV show I am producing, is starting up this Thursday. There are many many talented and smart people helping out on this project, and it promises to be something special (I hope I hope I hope no one gets hurt). I highly recommend you check it out, and if you are up for it, participate.

TV is the theme this month, and I am now contributing to a new blog about television, Inner Tubing. My first two articles are on How It's Made and Beyond Scared Straight. There are many other fabulous contributors, so if you are looking for something to read when you are not watching television, I recommend you check it out.

Anyhow, now = interesting and busy. Spring!

March 13, 2011

If you are at all interested in what the best possible future for the Middle East will look like, look no farther than Rana Jarbou. She finally has a blog, you can read it at ranajarbou.blogspot.com/. Rana first impressed me with her character, which you can sense instantly, but she blew me away with her meticulous, exacting intellect and belief in the right to dignity for all people.

On a related note, don't believe that the challenge we face is to stabilize markets. The challenge we face now, as we have always faced, is the challlenge to preserve life and dignity in the face of a world that is bigger, stronger, and more indifferent than any of us, whether rich or poor.

First Robin of Spring

March 11, 2011

was singing outside my window when I woke up this morning.

I made some "web art" for the Artist's AXON at InterAccess this past February. It, along with the amazing font I made, are now online at the InterAccess AXON archive. Past artists include Sally McKay and Lorna Mills, Matthew Williamson and Jeremy Bailey.

In other news, the website for Subjects, the exhibition and Reality Show I have coming up, is now online. Check it out here at www.subjectsrealitytelevision.com.

What Were Once Facts Are Now Opinions

February 20, 2011

I am producing a new Reality TV show this April, Subjects. Subjects' subjects audition through a process of amateur psychotherapy, their videorecorded sessions tightly edited for broadcast on a weekly basis. Production begins March 31, 2011 in Toronto. Check back for more information, or contact me to audtion.

Comfortable Distance

January 30, 2011

Nothing poetic to say this week. Just waiting and watching.

The Emergence Collective has just posted an interview with me from their "The Future of Art" documentary series for the Transmediale festival in Berlin. You can watch it here. I have not seen it yet. Please feel free to contact me if you have any issues with whatever came out of my mouth.

The Nadir

January 11, 2011

The days are getting longer, but have been short so long that it's hard to feel it. There are some positives to being at the absolute bottom of something. One is that you really don't have anywhere else to go but up. Of course, this only applies to something that cycles. If you fall down a hole, and hit the bottom, you can't go any deeper, but there are certain factors that may limit your ability to climb out.

Just to be clear, I got the flu January 1 and stopped reading the news for an entire week.

A short clip from my most recent performance, TOTAL PANIC, is now online. You can watch it here. I have also uploaded a clip with audio from The Ghost, so if you haven't seen it live you can experience a somewhat-less-bare approximation now.

Finally, you can read an essay written about my work by Gabrielle Moser here. It's pretty exciting for me. If you want to write something about me, too, you can. Just saying. There's a lot to work with.

December 23, 2010

Why is it so hard to do what is right?

Why is it so easy to regret?

Continuing Education

November 3, 2010

This morning I rode my bike to work as a thin crecent moon set over the lake while the first light of dawn turned the water pink and gold and silver.

From the most recent experiment: most people do not like to place blame if it will not directly benefit them.

Finally, 9 days until this show, November 12 and 13 in case you forgot or no one told you. It's going to be spectacular.

Autumn Leaves

October 26, 2010

If you've been wondering what I am up to, you should come out and see this show on November 12 and 13. New project, with dancers! Live.

More soon, so soon, first sleep, then work again.

Progress Report

July 8, 2010

Results are pouring in, and despite the reality that we are totally screwed, a significant majority is desperately, in the face of all odds, clinging to hope. I am closely monitoring the situation, and will update you on any significant changes

In other news, I am currently working on a four-and-a-half hour psychedelic epic, to be screened sometime in the fall. Please contact me for inquiries or to book a screening.

Public Life

June 16, 2010

I just tore open a private letter with the intent to share a thought publicly. Then I realized what I had done and changed my mind, but when the person receives their letter they will know it was opened before it got to them.

Sometimes an action does not alter its meaning, even when you change your mind about it.

Lizard People

Apparently, if you look up the term quebec reptilian humanoid my site is on the first page of results. My ambitions of leading a cult once again move closer to reality...

Living Your Life As A Work Of Art

May 20, 2010

One Month Relationship has been updated, with results. Too much international traffic was arriving expecting advice and receiving an art project. Cautionary tale?

The Only Thing Art Ever Got Me Is Laid

May 11, 2010

My facebook account has been deleted, let's see how long that lasts. I feel clean.

Moving on, you can still tell me what to do in the projects section. There are a few upcoming events this month, including a talk at the Vagabond Trust. This summer I want to make MONEY, I am so focused on this pursuit that I made a new emoticon:

Get ready, world, I have a purpose and a goal. Contact me if you would like to propose something.

Pleasure Chemicals

March 2, 2010

So this was what came up when I decided to do some fortune telling on wikipedia. Interesting.

Infinite expansion? Eventual contraction?

What do you prefer, ever expanding concentric circles, or more of a pulsating effect? Mixing it up is usually best, what is the system? Is there an ideal? Maybe only in the moment. An ideal moment. The perfect moment.
If every moment is perfect, are the imperfect moments the most beautiful and significant?

What is the significance of beauty?

Next project: trancend time.

The Personal Is Political

February 1, 2010

The beautiful drawing that was born out of the collaboration between Luke Ramsey and myself in 2008 is on sale as part of a fundraiser for Haiti. This is an unbeleivable deal on a really lovely piece, and it's for a good cause. We're still determining where to put the funds, if you have any suggestions for solid NGO's or citizen's groups, let us know. Let's get free!

Upcoming shows in Montreal, LA and San Fransisco. If you want to host any of my stuff anywhere on the Pacific coast or in Mexico, send me an e-mail. I'll be touring with these awesome ladies (uh, that's right there's 2 links there).

My Life, My Swag

January 12, 2010

New projects up and running, especially this One Month Relationship everyone's excited about. Lunar.

You can also get a listen to Total Honesty, the other thing folks are freaking out over.

Upcoming shows in Toronto, LA and San Fransisco, details posted soon.

The best thing about making art using the internet is that you only need the internet to make it.

Is utopia possible? Do we really want it? If it came, would we get bored and invent new problems? Or is the nature of the universe such that it will throw problems at us anyways?

Experimenting with a new format, going to keep these pieces of text up in a scrolling manner, like the events page. How do you like it?

Still at Palomar5. New text up. Breakfast With Zeesy continues apace, check it out or something, it will enhance your life (style).

If You Keep Going, It Will Get Done, Even If It's A Different It From What You Planned.

There's so many things going on right now I am getting surpirsed by them, sneaking up and going "NOW!" Trying to limit internet usage to work and dating. Strangely, internet use seems to not be decreasing. You can check the schedule (of my life) here.

In other AMAZING news, I've been accepted to Palomar5, a sort of utopian residency/conference on WORK. I feel so blown away that I get to hang out with all kinds of intense and accomplished and arty and motivated and charming young people. Full list of participants is here. I'm looking forward to seeing what all comes of it.

I will tell you exactly what I think of your band, for $10 per member. Please, no MySpace or mp3's, I only want to see your posters, merch and maybe some promo photos or something.

Here is a collage of every boy I have ever dated, in chronological order. Please don't judge them based on the portrait, this is what they looked while we were involved.

Adjustments are coming to my menu/filing system, b/c the current one is misleading/confusing. For now, here is some of the newer stuff: here and here.
